Dubai is taking a major step towards a more resilient future with the approval of a large-scale infrastructure project worth AED 1.439 billion. The initiative aims to upgrade and expand the city’s stormwater drainage system.
The project is part of the broader Tasreef program, which includes the construction and rehabilitation of drainage networks across nine key areas of the city: Nad Al Hamar, Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa. The total length of the new pipelines will exceed 36 kilometers.
The primary goal is to reduce the risk of flooding—particularly during periods of heavy rainfall—while ensuring greater efficiency and reliability in drainage operations. These new lines will be connected to the main Tasreef tunnel, which will link drainage networks throughout the emirate, significantly increasing their overall capacity.
The project is also expected to cut operational and maintenance costs, aligning with Dubai’s long-term vision to become a smart, sustainable city ready to face future environmental challenges.
According to experts, the initiative will boost the drainage system’s capacity by more than 700%, marking a major milestone for the region. Construction and operational expenses are projected to drop by 20%, while the overall lifespan of the infrastructure will be significantly extended.
With a total estimated investment of AED 30 billion, the Tasreef project is the largest stormwater infrastructure development in Dubai’s history. It is designed for long-term scalability and will serve the city’s needs for the next 100 years.
